Whips -
The
whip is an extension of the driver's hand and replaces the legs as a primary
aid. In carriage driving, the whip should be long enough so that the driver can
easily reach the horse's shoulder. A
good whip is also well balanced; this minimizes the effort of holding and using
it. |

Gloves - The length and
weight of long lines or driving reins increase the amount of force on the
drivers hands. Gloves are therefore an essential for driving safety.
Quality leather gloves with seamless palms give the driver a firm but
sensitive hold. Olaf offers a variety of high quality gloves.
Deerskin, and insulated. |

Long lines - Ground
driving or long-lining is an important part of training the horse to become
balanced, supple and collected. Long
lining also develops the driver's hands in a relatively safe setting.
Ideal long-lines are made of leather and are 42 feet long.
Long lining is best done using a surcingle or driving saddle, and an open bridle,
which allows eye contact between
horse and driver.

Bits - The
bit is one of the three aids available to the carriage driver.
As in riding, correct fit and proper construction of the bit is essential
to good communication with the horse. Olaf
offers a variety of high quality bits as well as consultation on proper bitting
for the individual horse. |
